5 Electric Cars You Can Buy Now

CNNMoney.com highlighted 5 electric cars based on range, the amount of miles one can get on a charge, charge time, the amount of time it takes to charge the battery(s), purchase price, and top speed.

The bad news is that none of the cars seemed practical for most of and the good news is that 2 of the car manufacturere promised they were working on more practical electric vehicles for the near future.

The Tesla Roadster charges in 3.5 hours, has a range of220 miles, a top speed of 125 mph, but costs $109,000.

Gem Car is from Chrysler global Electric Motors and charges in 6-8 hours, has a range of 30-40 miles, a top speed of 25 mph, and costs $7-13, 000.

Dynasty iT Sedan charges in 6 hours, a range of 30 miles, and a top speed of 25 mph with a cost of $14-25, 000.

The Zenn charges in 6-8 hours, a range of 30-50 miles, a top speed of 25 mph, and costs $16,000.

The Zap Xbra charges in 6 hours, a range of 25 miles, a top speed of 40 mph, and a price of $11,700.

If cost was not an issue with me I would buy the Tesla Roadster or at look into it further. It charges in about half the time of the other cars. It has more than enough range for me 99% of the time for me where the range is not an issue for me. I'll never get to the 125 mph but that speed indicates I could take it on the highways with speed leftover, unlike the other cars listed. But the cost is $109,000 and I am more of an under $20,000 car buyer.

I think the market is there for a practical performing electric vehicle at a fair price in the tens of millions of vehicles.

I think there will more practical electric vehicles in the market place within the next 2 years, but if production is only in the thousands and if demand is in the millions the lucky few obtaining vehicles will pay a premium for them due to a shortage of availability.

Hopefully the charging aparatus will be in each vehicle so that one would only need to plug in an electric wire from an outlet into the vehicle. It would be easy to plug in from home for most stand alone homeowners. It would be less practical away from home or if someone lived in a large housing complex. Charging facilities for the public would have to be available.

My major concern is whether the local electric companies could support charging of thousands, and eventually millions of electric cars daily. Our local electric companies become stressed during the summers on very hot days when air conditioning and fans are in heavy use, so tens of thousands or even milllions of electric chargers would compound the stress. PSE&G, my local electric company and your local electric company should be working on a solution to handle additional demand.
