NEW YORK -- The tough job of cleaning up after a volcano-like steam explosion continued Saturday in a Manhattan neighborhood littered with debris. Workers in respirator masks and blue protective suits prepared to scrub down buildings and clean up streets sprayed with toxins and mud after a steam main erupted beneath an intersection a block from Grand Central Terminal.

I bet you thought the headline indicated cleanup of the World Trade tower area after 9/11. No. The reason why I posted this article is to show that a much less significant explosion this past week is obtaining much more serious cleanup consideration and action that 9/11.

EPA Secretary Christine Whitman and Mayor Rudy Giuliani were in charge and there was no such thing as a meaningful cleanup of the surrounding 2 miles of the World Trade Center towers site or even within blocks of it.

We all have seen pictures of the tremendous clouds of smoke on 9/11. We saw everything in the area and the surrounding 2 miles covered in dust. This year, 2007, they are still finding remains of 9/11 victims. The poisonous dust that we saw in the air and some that settled that day as we all know goes everywhere and can settle anyplace. It can also be transferred anyplace also. Settled dust can also be disturbed and fly into the air to eventually settle somewhere else.

Whitman and Rudy Giuliani did not even call for a minimal cleanup of the building facades and roof areas, the air conditioning and exhaust duct work, surrounding subway lines and equipment, the streets, the other underground tunnels in the area, and any floorspace of any building in the area whether used or unused by people.

They declared the area safe for people to return to their homes and jobs immediately without an intensive cleanup or prudent delay for the wind to disburse some of the hazardous material so it would do less harm. (Maybe it should have been cleaned up so it would not disburse.)

I can witness that even months after 9/11 the air was foul and the 9/11 dust was still visible on the streets, on the buildings, and in the subways because I worked everyday there in the Wall Street area at the time. I am sure settled dust was kicked up again by the cars, trucks, and buses in the street and the subways in the tunnels. Maybe I should have quit and found work elsewhere. Maybe the area should have been called unsafe and closed for a month or two for cleanup. Maybe it should have been mandatory for anyone to wear a respirator to be in that area for several months after 9/11.

Now we have dozens of lost lives and thousands of people sick because of the 9/11 contamination. Thank you Christine Whitman and Rudy Giuliani. I believe Christine and Rudy Giuliani belong in the infamous hall of shame for being inadequate and harmful to the citizens that lived and worked in the Wall Street area during 9/11. Effectively, they murdered innocent people with airborne and ground toxins from 9/11. How delusional can these two people be for their 9/11 efforts and on is running for President of the United States.

Christine Whitman and Rudy Giuliani smell worse than the long lasting fumes of 9/11.
